The Institute believe that life up in the Commonwealth isn't viable for long, is going in the wrong direction, and that the survival of humanity depends on them and their extremely advanced science. Specifically, they want to make sure something like the atomic bomb never happens again. The BOS believe in comradery and preventing the misuse of technology.
Depends on your personal opinion, they all have causes that seem noble enough on paper.
